The Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development (CED) welcomes the chance to be a part of the Kentucky Nuclear Energy Development Authority. More information is also available on the Authority website.
The Secretary of the Cabinet for Economic Development serves on the Board to assure our resources are available to work with communities interested in the Nuclear-Ready Community Designation.
There are two tracks for the Nuclear-Ready Community Designation. The “Nuclear Energy” designation is for those communities seeking a designation for power generation. The “Nuclear Supply Chain” designation allows communities to seek a designation for projects within the nuclear supply chain that do not include power generation. There is also an option for communities to pursue both designations.
A preliminary application for the Nuclear-Ready Community Designation will be submitted to and reviewed by KNEDA. The link to submit a letter of intent form to KNEDA is located here.
CED will be consulted to evaluate sites as part of the final application review process.
The Cabinet is developing a set of criteria to assist communities in determining if they wish to be considered a Nuclear Ready Community, and if so, use these criteria to determine if they wish to submit the sites for CED review.
CED shall review the sites, confer with various state and federal agencies, public utilities and the local community as to the viability of the site when compared to the criteria developed by CED. At that time, CED may also suggest other sites within the county of the applicant that may also fit within the criteria CED has established.
If the sites meet the level of acceptance by CED, a letter acknowledging the site as “Meeting the Criteria of the CED for consideration by potential Nuclear projects.”
More information regarding the Nuclear-Ready Community Designation will be shared as updates become available.
